Traveling By Motorcoach

Motorcoach travel remains the safest mode of transportation. The Federal Highway Administration is responsible for the safety of all commercial vehicles registered to operate on federal highways. This includes motorcoaches and trucks, which are required to comply with stringent safety rules. To make sure they do, Department of Transportation (DOT) inspectors continually conduct safety checks at garages, along the highways and at major tourism areas throughout the United States.

To legally operate a motorcoach, company owners must comply with DOT rules, which are:

  • Must apply for a "certificate of authority" to operate
  • Must provide proof of liability insurance
  • Must pass a rigorous safety inspection
  • Must perform drug and alcohol testing
  • Must have licensed and qualified drivers
  • Must ensure that drivers adhere to strict rules on hours of service and safety.
